Logan held the picture with trembling hands and stared at it for a long, long time, hot tears welling up slowly and then rolling down his face.
As his shocked mind went through every aspect of the story he had read, he sat shaking his head in sorrow. When he could bear it no more, he set the picture down slowly and opened the book, flipping through gently until he found the girl's picture. Her face swam before his vision because of the tears in his eyes and he shook his head roughly and blinked them out so that he could see her more clearly.
It did not matter to him that it had been beyond his control -- that they were taken from him, ripped from the very depths of his soul. In his mind there was no excuse good enough. He sobbed quietly as he choked out the words, "I'm so sorry, Darlin' -- I didn't remember you."
When he was able, he placed the picture back gently in its place and opened the book again at the beginning. He sniffed angrily, wiped the tears off of his face and out of his eyes and began reading the book again -- and this time -- he tucked every precious word away, deep into his lonely, aching heart.
