Chapter 4
by

Dedications and thanx: Tess, my x-cellent best mate, who has co-edited this with my beta, Winona. My english teacher who doesn't lose her head too much when I hand in ridiculously long essays discussing the triangle between Logan, Rogue and Jean, when it should be about D'arcy and Elizabeth in Pride and Predujice. All dreamers. They have true vision. Punk and rock bands. You can never have too much hair dye.

NB. The 4th chapter is still being worked on, so bear with me. Hope you like it!

Saffy and Logan stood on opposite sides of the elevator. Saffy wasn't sure of Logan yet, and since he had growled at her, it had made her even more wary of him. Logan just slouched in one corner and watched her idly out of the corner of his eye. 'Damn, I shouldn't have growled. Should've kept me temper. Kid's scared now.' Saffy looked at him for a moment and smiled weakly, then turned back to staring at the dial that told what floor they were on.

Saffy's voice suddenly cut through the silence. "Have. . . have you found anything out. . . about the, uh, experiment." Logan looked at her for a moment, trying to decide whether or not to tell her. He sighed. "Kid. . . "

"It's Saffy. . . " she muttered.

"O.K. I've been around for the past year and a half trying to find anything to do with the experiment, and all I got was a big fat zero. They destroyed all the files in the labs I went to if there was any possible information, and the rest were just completely empty."

"So there's nothing?" she looked at him this time, and he saw that she looked genuinely worried. "Well, have you looked hard enough? Been to all the places?"

"Twice over, Saffy. And there is absolutely nothing there. They've been very smart in cleaning up."

"Maybe there's something back home in England then. . . "

"It's a possibility."

"Then. . . then, I'll find something. . . " Saffy's voice faded away as she looked at her shoes and thought.

"How?" Logan's voice was blunt. Saffy looked back up at him, and he was taken aback. Slowly Saffy's eyes were changing from hazel to a deep green, and he could see the anger and fear in them.

"I'll find a way. It might take a long time though."

The lift suddenly stopped at the main hall and the doors opened. Saffy walked briskly out of the elevator and looked around.

"Where to now?"

"This way. I'll show you the rec room." He started to march off. He wasn't angry, but her whole manner was starting to annoy him. How could she possibly find anything? She was building up false hopes not just for her, but for him as well. He didn't think he could take anymore of that.

"Logan!. . . " Saffy called back

"Yeah?" He stopped, but didn't turn around.

"I know you're angry at me. I got good senses. . . ."

Logan turned to look at her. She was standing a few metres away from him, and he was struck by how small she actually was. In the Med bay she had seemed taller because of her attitude. But now, when she was standing there, looking at him with a mixture of fear and concernshe was just a child.

Saffy's voice was quiet, and barely above a whisper "I might be able to help. I'm not promising anything, but I'm pretty competent with computers, and I may be able to hack into certain places and get something there"

"God, why am I bothering. He doesn't want to know. He's already said he's looked for ages. How the hell am I going to help?"

Suddenly she lost her temper. 'He doesn't want any help! He's just happy to have his tail between his legs and go "I've looked everywhere and found nothing"

"Oh for fuck's sake! Why are you making this so hard for me? Why can't you just take it as a compliment that I'm actually bothered to help you? I know you've been lookin' for ages, and I know from what I've picked up that you're disheartened and pissed off at everyone and anything, but I am trying to help us!" Logan was shocked. Not just by that fact that she had turned angry so suddenly, but by the colour of her eyes. They had turned again from deep green to light blue.

"Saffy. . . I. . . I'm sorry, O.K. I'm so used to finding nothing that it's what I expect every time."

"Yeah, well, maybe next time you should think of what people are actually like. Some people do want to help you."

"Saffy, I said I'm sorry. What else do you want me the hell to do?" This time it was Logan who was shouting.

"You can tell me what the hell this test is that you all have to confirm. That is what I want to know!"

Suddenly the voice of the Professor was in Saffy's head.

<SAFFY, there is no reason to be worried. The test is a simple procedure just to verify if you and Logan are related. Your mutations are so rare that it might be a possibility that you could be a distant relation to each other. >

Saffy looked at Logan in shock.

"Did you know this?" her voice was a harsh whisper.

Logan never got a chance to reply. Saffy turned and ran out of the Mansion, and into the forest.
